The Allegations
In December 2019, customers alleged that Daryl Serizawa recommended highly inappropriate private investment funds. This case is currently pending. The customers are seeking $350,000 in damages.
What Does This Mean?
Private investment funds are high-risk securities that do not trade on any public securities exchanges. They are very poorly regulated and can often prove incredibly harmful to investors. This is because of their speculative and illiquid nature, as well as their associated upfront fees that can drain an investor’s principal of up to 17 percent. When an investor loses that much money up front, it makes it near impossible for them to see any returns under anything besides booming market conditions. Brokers continue to recommend these types of investments to financially unsuited investors because they provide brokers with excessively high commissions when the transaction is executed.
